How Do You Clean Green Algae and Organic Buildup From a Vinyl Fence?
If a white vinyl fence is starting to turn green, more pressure isn't necessarily the answer.
The green discoloration commonly seen on exterior vinyl can include algae and other organic buildup that develops as the fence is exposed to moisture, shade, vegetation and outdoor conditions. Because vinyl isn't concrete, it should be cleaned using a process appropriate for the material.
In this video, Premier Pro Wash & Seal professionally cleans a white vinyl fence with significant green organic buildup.
So, how do we approach a vinyl fence cleaning?
1. Evaluate the fence first.
Before cleaning, we look at the condition of the vinyl, surrounding landscaping and the type of buildup we're dealing with. Not every discoloration is necessarily organic growth, so identifying what you're cleaning matters.
2. Apply an appropriate cleaning solution.
For algae, mold and other organic buildup, the cleaning solution is an important part of the process. Giving the solution appropriate time to work helps loosen and treat the buildup rather than relying on excessive water pressure to remove it.
3. Use controlled pressure appropriate for vinyl.
A vinyl fence doesn't need to be attacked with the same pressure that might be appropriate when professionally cleaning durable concrete. The goal is to remove the buildup effectively while using a cleaning method suited to the surface.
4. Work methodically across the fence.
Posts, panels, rails, corners and other areas can collect buildup differently. Cleaning systematically helps produce a more consistent result rather than leaving patches of green growth behind.
5. Rinse the fence thoroughly.
Once the cleaning solution has done its job, the fence and surrounding areas should be thoroughly rinsed. Attention should also be given to nearby landscaping throughout the cleaning process.
The result? A white vinyl fence that looks white again, without assuming that more pressure means better cleaning.
How frequently a fence needs professional cleaning depends on the property. Heavy shade, nearby trees and vegetation, irrigation, moisture and other conditions can cause organic buildup to return faster in some areas than others.
